Breast lift surgery, as the name suggests, is a procedure that involves the lifting and firming of the breasts. It should be very clear in the patient’s mind that a breast lift is not going to enhance the size of the breasts. It is mainly performed to firm up sagging or drooping breasts. This condition can happen due to aging, after childbirth or due to drastic weight loss. In all these situations, breasts tend to lose their natural elasticity. A breast lift is an excellent way to improve this condition and provide the breasts with a more youthful appearance.
There are various techniques for performing a breast lift. The techniques differ primarily on the basis of the type of incision made. The most basic is the nipple lift, where a half circle scar is made over the top of the areola. The second type is the lollipop lift. In this case, the skin beneath the nipple is removed and tightened up, and the scar ends up in the shape of a lollipop. The third type is a circular breast lift, where a doughnut sized incision is made around the nipple. The loose skin is then excised and the big circle is brought down to the small circle.
The most comprehensive of all breast lifts is the anchor mastopexy. In this case, the scar is made in the shape of an anchor; a circular shape around the areola. A skillful surgeon will be able to keep the scar as thin as a thread. In fact, the scar will totally disappear in six to seven months. However, this kind of a perfect result can be achieved only with a highly experienced plastic surgeon.
Overall, the breast lift is a fairly uncomplicated surgery if the operating surgeon is a specialist in such procedures. The patient will be asleep during the surgery and there is no pain to be experienced when he or she wakes up after the procedure. When the bandages are removed, the breasts will appear just the way they were before a woman’s first pregnancy.
The discomfort during and after the breast lift is minimal because it is a skin-only surgery. In fact, many patients may not even require any painkillers after the surgery. Some patients may take one or two painkillers during the first 24 hours, but beyond that, there is no need for them.
